Teeth extraction and dental implants

by Sara Boulhanna

Patients, led by creative marketing, often visit us willing to extract their healthy teeth in order to get the dream “Hollywood” smile. Even worse – patients are often encouraged and advised by pushy salesmen to have their healthy teeth extracted in order to get the dream Hollywood smile. This is against the medical ethics and for us at Sofia Implant Centre this is a forbidden practice.

One thing needs to be clear – an implant is never better than a healthy natural tooth. When there are bad teeth without a chance for healing, only then do they have to be removed.

Extraction is a relatively simple surgical procedure. After tooth extraction a wound is formed which must heal for at least 4 months before an implant can be placed. After implant placement, there is again a waiting process of at least 4 months before a permanent crown can be placed.

Placing an implant immediately in the place of an extracted tooth is risky and with a significant chance of failure! In very rare cases, based on the assessment of an experienced surgeon, this risk can be considered acceptable. Such cases require special implants. At Sofia Implant Center we avoid this scenario.

An implant needs 4 to 6 months to integrate with the bone and to gain stability before it can be loaded with a crown. When the missing tooth is in the front, in order to be aesthetically pleasing, a temporary crown is to be attached to the adjacent teeth.

It may sound a bit unexpected, but for a full jaw reconstruction there is an option for instant loading, as opposed to single implants. Since the immediate load of the implant is a problem in dental restorations, scientists have invented a great option for complete restoration without the need for bone grafting. The protocol is called All-on-4 or All-on-6 – this is a whole jaw of 10, 12 or 14 teeth fixed permanently on 4 or 6 implants. It can be loaded immediately. You can find out the advantages of All-on-4/6 in a separate post.
